Tour 2. HuangShan (Yellow Mountain)
The Yellow Mountain Tour starts and ends in
Shanghai and lasts for two weeks. The first night is in a hotel in
Shanghai. The tour includes a flight from Shanghai to Tun Xi to begin
the hikes and at the end of the tour a flight from He Fei to Shanghai (flight arrives in
time to connect with flights to North America).
Itinerary:
Day One: Arrive in Shanghai. One night in Shanghai.
Our hotel is a good quality three-star hotel. Rooms have private bath.
Day Two: Flight from Shanghai to Tun Xi. This has been one of the most important towns in the region
since ancient times. It lies in the upper reaches of the XinAn River -
the vital communications link between the provinces of Anhui, Jiangxi
and Zhejiang. The Ancient Tunxi Street is so antique and quaint that it
has been referred to as "The Town of the Song Dynasty" and has
been used for shooting films of ancient Chinese stories. In ancient times this
was a prosperous trading town and prosperity allowed the building of
mansions, temples, roads and bridges.
We stay for three nights at a hotel in the town and each day we go
hiking along the Xinan River. The river winds 293 km through magnificent
mountains and hills. The transparent water and enchanting scenery has
made this a "waterway gallery" on the golden travel route from
HuangShan to HandZhou.
Day Three: In the early morning we can visit the farmers' market and
the local park where people do Tai Chi exercise. Our hikes continue
along the river.
Day Four: Again we stay in Tun Xi and during the
day we hike along the XinAn River. It is a gently flowing river
with forests of fir, bamboo, tea bushes, loquat and orange on either
side. There are numerous scenic spots along the river.
Day Five: We continue to the village of YiXian.
Day Six: We stay again at YiXian and climb Mount QiYun. (There is
a cablecar for anyone who chooses not to hike).
Mount QiYun is one of the four holy places of Taoism in China, deeply revered
and yearned for by Taoists. Its peaks, rocks and caves are red, giving
the area the name "Landform of Rosy Clouds". We will visit
such scenic spots as Moonlight Street, the Cloud Rock Caves and
Tower-Upon-Tower.
For over two thousand years Mount QiYun has
attracted scholars from all over the world. Their numerous stone
inscriptions mark their pilgrimmages. Mount QiYun has become a holy
place for Chinese culture lovers everywhere.
Day Seven: We continue to HuangShan. In 1990 the HuangShan region was listed by UNESCO as a world culture
and natural heritage area. It has many famous mountains and peaks over
1800 metres above sea level. There are over 400 scenic spots making
HuangShan one of the most spectacular areas of China. Our hikes will include visits to four unique
attractions. We move from hotel to hotel in this region and the
following are some of the places we visit. One night is at a four-star
hotel on top of Yellow Mountain. It is amazing to rise early and witness
a sunrise above the clouds.
The Queer Pines –
are ancient, sinewy and oddly shaped trees that exude and exquisite
beauty. Visitors will marvel at these delicate examples of nature’s
handiwork.
The Grotesque Rocks
– these rocks are so unusual visitors will be struck not only by their
beauty but also by the many images they represent.
The Cloud Seas –
seen from the peaks of Mount HuangShan are truly mystical. Stretching to
the horizon, these great waves of mist and clouds sometimes surge with
the momentum of an avalanche. At other times the clouds are still and
silent.
The Hot Springs –
are constantly at a temperature of 42C. These rare springs of carbonated
water have remarkable curative effects on such diseases as dermatitis,
arthritis and nervous disorders.
Day Eleven: Our last three days are hiking in the JiuHuaShan region. Mount
Juihua is 1342
meters above sea level, Mt Juihua blends ancient Buddhist culture with
elegant, tranquil scenery. It has the characteristics of
primitive simplicity, peacefulness, a rich religious presence and much
beauty. Regarded as one of the four most important Buddhist mountains in
China, there are over 100 temples, 6800 figures of Buddha and over 2000
Buddhist relics. More than 700 monks and nuns live and farm in the
surrounding woods and hills.
We visit Juihua Street which is a centre of
temples, civilian houses, hotels and shops. This unique spot is one
where monks and villagers coexist. Their temples with distinctive
white-walled and gray-tiled homes are most picturesque.
Day Twelve: We visit two spectacular temples in this region. QuYuan
Temple houses three gilded Buddhas over ten metres tall. HuaCheng Temple
is a museum housing over 2000 Buddhist relics.
Day Thirteen: Morning hike and
afternoon tour of HeFei. We stay for one night in this town, the
capital city of AnHui Province.
Day Fourteen: Fly from HeFei to Shanghai in the morning.
