A
guided walking trail holiday on the fringes of Dartmoor from the
picturesque village of Manaton to Princetown, the highest town in Devon
and Cornwall. We encounter granite quarries, Iron Age forts and ancient
hamlets as we walk by Castle Drogo, the Teign Valley, the Tarka Trail,
the market towns of Okehampton and Tavistock, and Dartmoor Prison. We
stay for a week at Haytor and each day travel by minivan to start and
end the walks. Itinerary: 7 nights - GUIDED TRAIL 57 miles. 10 – 12½ and up to 1,900ft of ascent in a day Day 1: arrival day. Day 2: pass the moorland town of Moretonhampstead and Iron Age hilltop fort before descending to River Teign gorge and up to Castle Drogo. Day 3: through Chagford, Gidleigh, Throwleigh and South Zeal, to Finch Iron Foundry in Sticklepath, and along Tarka Trail in Belstone Cleave to Belstone village. Day 4: through Okehampton, Meldon Quarries to Lydford village and the ruins of gaol. Day 5: free day to explore or walk independently. Day 6: visit Lydford Gorge waterfalls, then on lanes and tracks to Mary Tavy and Tavistock. Day 7: climb via Sampford Spinney to follow the disused railway track across open moorland and past abandoned granite quarries to Princetown with its grim prison. Day 8: departure day. Where we Stay: MOORLANDS is situated high on the moor below Haytor Rocks, one of Dartmoor's best-known landmarks. It was this magnificent setting that inspired Agatha Christie to write her first book in 1917. The 32 en-suite rooms look out over rolling Devon countryside and eight acres of grounds. The lavish interiors of the public rooms are a reminder of previous ownership by a colourful local millionaire and today the property provides a grand base for country walking holidays. All meals are included. |
