GUIDED TRAIL HOLIDAYS

Great Glen Way

7 nights - 2012

The Great Glen Way follows the magnificent fault-line that makes up the Caledonian Canal. Low-level towpaths and forest trails lead us on a leisurely walk from Scotland’s western shores at Fort William, to the east and the highland city of Inverness. The Great Glen takes us along the banks of Loch Lochy, Loch Oich, and the ever-famous Loch Ness, with many an opportunity to admire the stunning highland scenery surrounding you. We stay for a week at one hotel and each day are transported by private mini-van to start and end the walk.

73 miles. 8-14* miles per day with a maximum daily ascent of 1,640ft (*the final day’s walk is 18 miles).

Itinerary:  GUIDED       GREAT GLEN WAY
Day 1:  Arrival day
Day 2: Fort William to Achnacarry  12 ½ miles (20km)
The gentle tow paths of the Caledonian Canal lead us from Fort William to Gairlochy, past the impressive Neptune’s Staircase. On a clear day you’ll be treated to fantastic views of Scotland’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis. From Garilochy, forest trails wind along the shore to Anchnacarry, where we end today’s walk at the 17th century croft house, now home to the Clan Cameron museum.
Day 3: Achnacarry to North Laggan
11 miles (17 ½ km)
Following forest tracks we hug the peaceful shores of Loch Lochy en route to Laggan and the secluded shores of Loch Oich. Enjoy a rest at the end of the day with a visit to the “Le Boat”, a canal boat that has since been converted to a bar/restaurant, moored at Laggan Locks.
Day 4: North Laggan to Fort Augustus
  9 miles (14 ¼ km)
Tranquil shores and mixed woodland paths offer us a scenic route to the historic village of Fort Augustus. Our day begins following the southern shores of Loch Oich, along what was once General Wade’s Military Road, before continuing at a leisurely pace along the tow paths. While away some time watching the boats make their way through the flight of locks in the centre of Fort Augustus.
Day 5: Fort Augustus to Invermoriston
8 miles (13 km)
Pay a visit to the Caledonian Canal heritage centre before you begin today. Some splendid forest trails take you past the River Moriston as it tumbles into the waters of Loch Ness, and on towards Invermoriston. Keep your eyes peeled, you never know, you may get a glimpse of the infamous Loch Ness Monster!
Day 6: Invermoriston to Drumnadrochit
  14 miles (22.5 km)
The shores of Loch Ness, and a mix of forest, moorland and farmland walking accompany us as we wind our way to the delightfully twee Drumnadrochit  for a little more ‘Nessie’ spotting! If time allows, and you can drag yourself away, make a visit to the Loch Ness Monster Exhibition Centre.
Day 7: Drumnadrochit to Inverness
18 miles (29 km), 540m (1772ft) of ascent
Our final day’s walk follows highland drove roads through conserved plantations of the ancient Scots pine to the Highland city of Inverness. This is the most challenging section of the Way, which reaches a fitting finale at the imposing Inverness castle. Any extra effort will be rewarded by spectacularly scenic views all the way.
Day 8: Departure Day
Take time to explore the city, its castle and cathedral before departing.

Where we Stay: Surrounded by towering mountain peaks, ALLTSHELLACH occupies a stunning location on the beautiful shores of Loch Leven.  Formerly a residence of the Bishop of Argyll, its facilities now include 2 lounges, a dance room and popular Highland Bar.  Following extensive refurbishment there are 37 en-suite bedrooms and new facilities include an indoor swimming pool and spa pool.  All meals are included.
