The
Sussex Ouse Valley Way is a journey, broadly following the River Ouse,
starting in Lower Beeding in the High Weald of West Sussex, crossing
into the Low Weald and passing through the South Downs, south of Lewes
to end in Seaford Bay. The River Ouse emerges into the English Channel
at Newhaven. We stay for the week at Abingworth Hall and each day travel
by minivan to start and end the day's walk.
Itinerary: GUIDED TRAIL WALK
42 miles. 7 - 10˝ miles and
up to 300ft of ascent in a day.
Day 1 Arrival
day.
Day 2 Starting at Lower Beeding
we’ll broadly follow the River Ouse through the Sussex Weald,
occasionally meeting the infant river, ending the day at Staplefield
Common.
Day 3 Meander through beautiful
wooded countryside to the pretty village of Lindfield.
Day 4 Continue through woodland
to the Bluebell Railway at Sheffield Park, before ending the day at
Newick.
Day 5 Free day to explore or
walk independently.
Day 6 Follow the riverbank of
the maturing Ouse for most of the day, discovering its industrial past,
to the historic county town of Lewes.
Day 7 Explore the tidal river
and its downland communities as we head to the mouth at the port of
Newhaven, before completing the trail at Seaford.
Day 8 Departure day.
WHERE WE STAY:
Abingworth Hall occupies a country estate that dates back some seven
centuries and stands beside its own lake in seven acres of parkland
within the tranquil Weald. Just three miles south, the crest of the
South Downs rises abruptly above the small town of Storrington. There is
a boot room, laundry facilities, mini-shop, croquet, 9 hole pitch
and putt, table tennis and heated outdoor pool (open May to September).
