HF
guided walking holidays cover THREE sections of the famous South West
Coast Path 630 mile National Trail.
Somerset and North Devon Coast Path - 55 miles with 9 to 13 miles
and up to 1,800ft of ascent in a day. This
most varied section of the South West Coast Path takes us from the
mellow hills and woodland of the Exmoor National Park to the wild cliffs
of north Devon. Beautiful scenery and ever-changing seascapes are our
constant companion as we walk from Minehead to Croyde Bay.
Itinerary:
Day 1:
Arrival Day
Day 2: Minehead to
Porlock Weir
Distance: 16km (10 miles), 450m (1,500ft) of ascent. The coach will pick
us up from Holnicote House and take us to the seafront at Minehead. We
ascend to the high level cliff path, which takes us to Hurlestone Point.
With a choice of going via Selworthy Beacon or via a wilder and more
rugged coastal path. From Hurlestone we continue to Bossington village
and westwards to Porlock Weir.
Day 3: Porlock
Weir to Lynmouth
Distance: 19km (12 miles), 420m (1,390ft) of ascent. Leaving the shore,
we make our way through woodland to the cliff path and on to Culbone
Church, the smallest parish church in England, where we walk down to
rejoin the coast path to continue our walk westwards. The woodland path
through Glenthorne Estate is a delight in all seasons. Shortly after
leaving the estate the path becomes more remote, overlooking parts of
the cliff edge with some fine viewpoints. We continue to Foreland Point
and a spectacular cliff path which takes us down to Lynmouth. Here we
have time for tea and the opportunity to look around this interesting
village before returning to our Country House accommodation by coach.
Day 4: Lynmouth to
Trentishoe Down Distance: 14˝km (9 miles), 550m (1,800ft)
of ascent
Starting from Lynmouth, we take the path near the cliff railway which
winds uphill to Lynton, following the North Walk along the seaward side
of Hollerday Hill and into the Valley of Rocks with its unusual
geological features. The coast path then takes us past Lee Bay and Woody
Bay before having to make a descent, down almost to sea level, then
steeply up out of Heddons Mouth Cleeve. We then follow the high level
path west above East Cleeve until we strike inland for Trentishoe Down
and take the coach home from Holdstone Down.
Day 5: Free day
Day 6: Trentishoe
Down to Ilfracombe Harbour Distance: 15km (9˝ miles), 515 m
(1,700ft) of ascent. A fairly long ride takes us back to Holdstone where
we take a wide open track which leads us round to Holdstone Down and the
deep valley of Sherrycombe. A fairly steep ascent out of the combe and
up to the Great Hangman follows and we continue on to the Little Hangman
where we have lunch on the hillside overlooking Combe Martin. After
lunch we walk down for a short stop in the town before continuing along
the coast path to Watermouth Bay, round the headlands to Hele and up to
Hillsborough for its fine views. We then descend into Ilfracombe where
there may be the opportunity to sample a Devon tea before our journey
back home.
Day 7: Ilfracombe
Harbour to Croyde Bay Distance: 21km (13 miles), 485m (1,600ft)
of ascent
Our final day begins in Ilfracombe, from where we ascend through the
spectacular "Torrs Walk" to the old coast track on the open
downs. From Lee to Woolacombe the coast path hugs the cliffs and has a
remote feel to it, with many ascents and descents. Depending on the
tide, we may walk along the sands or along the road / track between
Woolacombe and Vention. The path takes us out to Baggy Point, our most
westerly point, with its fine views of Lundy Island. We follow the path
east into Croyde Bay where we conclude our section of the South West
Way. Our coach takes us back to Holnicote House.
