The Howgill Fells (hills) rise to over 2,000ft above the grey-slate roofs of the village of Sedbergh and offer hikes over wide-open landscapes. Explore paths along the valley floor, through typical Dales villages, to Whernside, the highest of Yorkshire's Three Peaks. There are magnificent waterfalls, including Hardraw Force and Aysgarth Falls, plus the impressive Bolton Castle waiting to be discovered. Sedburgh is a small and friendly market town and nearby are Wensleydale and Swaledale made famous by James Herriott.
