| Itinerary:
Day 1: To Bridgetown - Fly
to Bridgetown for an afternoon transfer to the Sugar Cane
Club for 10 nights. Relax in the pool, or explore the gardens,
before a welcome dinner.
Day 2: Pre-European Barbados
- An easy walk from Salt Cave Cove along the white sands of
Long Beach to the archaeological site of Chancery Lane swamp, an
important resting site for migratory birds.
Day 3: Holetown - Walk
along the west coast beach of Holetown, where the first European
settlers arrived. Continue to historic Little Bristol and walk
through the town and on the beach, seeing the old fort.
Day 4: Farley Hill
National Park - Walk through woodland with dramatic views
of the rugged Scotland District and the coast. Visit the Jacobean St
Nicholas Abbey, the oldest house in Barbados dating back to the
1650s. Descend Cherry Tree Hill to Morgan Lewis Windmill, the most
intact of its kind on the island. This evening a local astronomer
will help you to explore the tropical night sky.
Day 5: Drax Hall - Walk
to Drax Hall and hear stories of the sugar cane plantations and
accounts of the slave trade that affected this area until its
abolition in 1807. Continue along a beautiful stretch of coastline
from Bottom Bay to The Crane.
Day 6: Bridgetown - Morning
visit to the vibrant capital, Bridgetown, for a guided historic walk
and visit to the Garrison site and fort dating from 1702. In the
afternoon there will be a chance to join local hikers on a Barbados
National Trust walk.
Day 7: At leisure - Today
is a free day, with time to relax on the beach, swim or snorkel, or
to take one of the various optional activities on offer, including a
yoga session or a trip on a catamaran. The evening begins with a Rum
Punch party.
Day 8: Andromeda Tropical
Gardens - After visiting the spectacular plant collection
at the Andromeda Gardens, we follow the old railway line from
Bathsheba to Martin’s Bay, before an evening savouring authentic
Caribbean cooking at the famous Waterfront Café.
Day 9: Turner’s Hall Woods
and Mount Hillaby - Walk in Turner’s Hall Woods, which
boasts at least 30 different species of tree and is the only area of
original forest surviving from the time of European settlement in
the 1600s. Continue to Mount Hillaby, the highest point on the
island at 1,116ft / 340m, for superb panoramic views.
Day 10: Harrison Cave and
Welchman Hall Gully - Morning walk through the wonderful
Flower Forest, 12 acres of tropical flowers and plants sourced from
all over the world. Follow the trails to Harrison’s Cave, one
of the largest caves in the Caribbean, and then walk through the
national park of Welchman Hall Gully.
Day 11: Depart for
home
