CHINA - An Oriental Adventure 2010

Combining visits to China's main historic sites with a selection of walks amidst the stunning limestone peaks of the Yangshuo countryside, and city sightseeing in Hong Kong, this holiday offers a memorable insight into both ancient and modern China.

Walking: Distances are generally between 2 and 8 miles. Ascents range from virtually nil up to 1,900 ft.  The itinerary will also include cultural and theatrical shows in Beijing and Xian. 

Hotels:  Comfortable three and four-star hotels, often with city centre locations. Included: All prices are per person and include:  16 nights accommodation in en-suite rooms.  Breakfast and Dinner plus eight lunches. All internal flights.  Services of an HF Holidays Walks Leader, tour director and local guides.  Walks, sightseeing, entrance fees and travel by coach or minibus.
Itinerary:
 

Day 1: Depart UK

 

Days 2 - 5: Beijing - 4 nights
Arrival in the great imperial city of Beijing where we visit Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and see inside some of the historic courtyard's of the hutongs.  We visit the Summer Palace and enjoy the unforgettable experience of walking on the Great Wall, where we explore the quieter Simatai section.

Days 6 & 7: Xian: 2 nights
Flight to ancient Silk Road city of Xian where we walk on the city walls and stroll the winding streets of the exotic muslim quarter.  The highlight of our stay is a visit to the vast burial place of the Terracotta Army - 7,000 individually crafted life-sized figures, complete with chariots and horses.

Days 8 - 9: Lijiang - 2 nights
Flight, via Kunming to the mountains of Yunnan province and the picturesque old town of Lijiang, where we visit the old town, with its winding streets criss-crossed by canals and ringed by rickety wooden buildings.

Days  10: - 1 night
We travel into the mountains and walk through Tiger Leaping Gorge, where the Yangtze River surges through one of the world's  deepest gorges.  We stay overnight in the gorge at the Tea Horse Guesthouse.

Day 11: Lijiang - 1 night
Another great day of panoramic mountain views and timeless ethnic minority villages as we complete our trek and return to Lijing.

Days 12 & 13: Guilin - 2 nights
Fly to Guilin to see the landscapes of the ancient Chinese watercolours, for walks in the hill terraces of the Longji Mountains.

Day 14 &15: Yangshuo - 2 nights 
Cruise along the Li River to Yangshuo (2 nights) where we walk to a mountain retreat and explore this unique landscape of limestone peaks and patterns of inter-connecting rice fields.  During our stay in Yangshou, there will be the opportunity  (weather conditions permitting) to attend  an outdoor performance of "Liu San Jie" - an outstanding  theatrical production of a traditional Chinese love story - including over 600 performers in a light, sound and dance spectacular in the natural setting of the Li River and surrounding mountains.

Days 16: Hong Kong - 2 nights
Visit a green tea garden before returning to Guilin and our flight to Hong Kong. 

Day 17: Hong Kong                                                                                                Enjoy a morning ridge walk on the Dragon's Back Trail on Hong Kong Island for splendid views of the city and over the South China Sea.

Day 18:      
Take the funicular to Victoria Peak and visit Hong Kong park and botanical gardens before our evening flight to the UK                                                                                              

Day 19:   Arrive UK.
