Guided Walking and Sightseeing:

This holiday will introduce you to South Africa's many landscapes and cultures. We journey into the heart of South Africa and some of the best walking in the world. We see the spectacular cliffs, gorges and valleys of the mighty Drakensberg Mountains. In the Zulu homelands we learn about the historic battlefields. We visit pristine Ghost Mountain and wonderful game reserves.

Guided Walks:  Distances are generally between 1 and 11miles. Ascents range from virtually nil to 2,100 ft with some rough terrain and steep ascents.  On some days there are opportunities to do challenging hikes including the ascent to Cathedral Peak summit.

Hotels:  Enjoy warm South African hospitality and excellent gourmet food in spectacular locations including the Cathedral Peak hotel in the heart of the mountains.  Isandlwana Lodge and Babanango Valley Lodge are lovely boutique lodges in the heart of the battlefields itself and Ghost Mountain Inn is a secluded retreat with excellent facilities. Included: 10 nights' accommodation in en-suite rooms. All meals from lunch on day 2 to breakfast on departure.  A full programme of guided walks, led by an HF Holidays leader and local guides.  Sightseeing, entrance fees and travel by coach or minibus.
Itinerary:
 
Day 1:
Depart UK.
 

Days 2:  Royal  Natal National Park - 3 nights
Early morning arrival and drive directly to the Royal Natal National Park in the North Drakensberg.  After lunch there will be the opportunity to stretch your legs on the trails leading out from the lodge, with spectacular views of the famous Amphitheatre.

Days 3 - 4:
Two excellent full days of walking in the Royal Natal National Park, including the magnificent Tugela Gorge hike and the Amphitheatre.

Day 5: Central Drakensberg - 3 nights
Travel tot he Central Drakensberg, an area of that includes some of South Africa's highest peaks, hidden valleys and precious San rock art.  Stay in the heart of the mountains at the splendid  Cathedral Peak Hotel.  This afternoon walk to the nearby bushman paintings or take part in a specialist birding hike.

Days 6 - 7 :
The spectacular Cathedral Peak range offers a great variety of excellent walks to suit all tastes, often directly from the hotel.  Memorable walks in these magnificent mountains include the scenic Rainbow Gorge and the Contour Walk to Mushroom Rock.

Days 8 -  9: Zululand - 2 nights
Journey into Zululand and the luxurious Isandlwana Lodge or Babanango Valley Lodge, with a beautiful setting overlooking the battlefields and South African plains.  We explore this area of rolling hills, visit a traditional Zulu village and enjoy a guided walk and a talk by a local battlefield specialist.  The story of the battles of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift will be brought expertly to life in the actual settings they took place.

Day 10 - 11:  Ghost Mountain Inn - 2 nights
Drive across KwaZulu Natal to Ghost Mountain Inn, a lovely place to relax in the South African countryside.  Walk up Ghost Mountain , which local legend say is haunted, enjoy a guided walk through the Mukuzi Game Reserve, arranged by special exclusive permission from the park, and take a sundowner cruise on Lake Joinzi with its population of hippo and crocodiles. 

Days  12:
Transfer to Durban for the flight home.
