Independent Walking
on the
Famous Trails of  Britain
2012
Dorset Coast Path,
Wessex, England

Independent walking holidays -   Wessex Trails - Dorset
The rich varied landscape and historical treasures of Dorset have inspired Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy and John Fowles (French Lieutenant's Woman was filmed at Lyme Regis). The walk starts at Lyme Regis and "Far from the Madding Crowd" is still a good description of many rural villages which lie peacefully in Dorset's hidden valleys and rolling hills. From Lyme Regis the path follows the coast eastward to Charmouth, famous for its fossil encrusted cliffs, and then to the headland of orange sandstone known as Golden Gap.

Day 1: Arrival day

Day 2: Walk from Lyme Regis to West Bay
10 miles/ 16km, 2,250ft ascent

Today’s walk takes us inland to Charmouth, before heading out to stunning cliff-tops and Golden Cap, for spectacular views.

Day 3: Walk from West Bay to Abbotsbury
9 miles/14.4km, 500ft ascent

Our walk undulates over beautiful sea cliffs, before arriving at the long, flat expanse of Chesil Beach. Walking inland again, we relax and refresh in the lovely village of Abbotsbury.

Day 4: Walk from Abbotsbury to Upwey
8 miles/ 12.8km, 1,200ft ascent and descent

A change of scene. Our itinerary takes you away from the low, flat path to Weymouth and instead up to the Hardy Monument, giving you fantastic views of Chesil Beach from above. Continuing along this alternative trail, takes us to Upwey, with its historic Wishing Well gardens and tearooms.

Day 5: Walk from Weymouth to Osmington Mills
4.5 miles/ 7.2km, 500ft ascent

Today’s walk is shorter, leaving you time to relax in the secluded pub gardens at the end of the day. The trail begins with an easy stroll along the Promenade at Weymouth, before peaceful, grassy cliff tops. Views of the famous Osmington White Horse will greet you en-route.

Day 6: Osmington Mills to Lulworth Cove
7.5 miles/ 12km, 2,400ft ascent

Dramatic landscapes again, and spectacular scenery. The walk undulates along the cliff tops, passing fascinating rock formations, including the well-known arch of Durdle Door, before descending to the beautiful cove at Lulworth.
