Gardens of Cornwall
plus the Eden Project

About the Eden Project:
Is there anybody out there who doesn’t, in quiet moments, feel in his or her heart that the future lies in working with the grain of nature? We are creatures. We may live in concrete burrows, and cover ourselves up in a million different ways, and talk of our command over all we survey. Yet nothing can disguise the fact that we are part of nature, indivisible from it. At Eden we want to explore what that means. Yes, Eden is a symbol of regeneration, a cauldron where science, technology and the arts could be cooked into an entertaining and educational experience, inspiring us to look at the world with fresh eyes."

Located near St Austell, the Eden Project is a dramatic global garden the size of thirty foot-ball fields and nestling like a lost world in a crater overlooking St Austell Bay. One of its giant conservatories (called a "Biome") is a majestic rain-forest cathedral. This Humid Tropics Biome hosts rubber plants, coffee, cocoa and rice. Another Biome is host to the fruits of the Mediterranean and the flowers of South Africa - grapevines, sunflowers, olives and citrus. Outside, in the landscaped grounds you will find tea and lavender, sunflowers and hemp. A third Biome for semi-arrid plants is planned. In these vast gardens we learn about the connection between medicine and plants, construction and plants, perfume and plants, brewing and plants.

The aim of the Eden Project is to show us the relationship between man and plants and how we need each other for mutual survival. There are many fascinating exhibits: the flowerless garden uses plants such as ferns which reproduce using spores. An exhibit devoted to pollinators shows us the relationship between plants and insects (your lunch may depend on insects assisting with plant reproduction). In another area we learn about cross-pollinating to produce cultivars and how new varieties are bred. We also learn how to grow food plants for taste (even out of season).
A futuristic area is concerned with plants for tomorrow's industries. Another is on plants in myth and folklore.

It is a fascinating day's visit.
