Sussex Garden Tour including the Hampton Court Flower Show
July 6 - 10, 2009
Itinerary

Mon    (Travel to Sussex is not included in the cost).  Abingworth Hall is located in the quiet Sussex countryside and we stay here for seven nights. Each day we explore wonderful gardens in the region. On arrival we have afternoon tea, dinner and an introduction to our leader for the week.

Tues
Hampton Court Palace Flower Show held in the grounds of Hampton Court Palace.  From contemporary to traditional, there are plenty of design ideas to suit any garden lover. Visitors can enjoy inspiring display gardens including tranquil water gardens. Hundreds of the UK’s best nurseries fill the floral marquees, Festival of Roses and Plant Heritage Marquee. Floral art, fruit and vegetables and floristry are also a major part of the show.

Wed  Denmans is a superb 20th century garden planted for all year interest It is the home of John Brooks who has designed over 1000 gardens all over the world and written 20 gardening books. The garden here has been artistically planted to create vistas with the emphasis on shapes, colours and textures. The garden has a variety of interesting paths and great use is made of contrasts in forms and foliage.  A huge greenhouse contains especially tender plants and more are grown in gravel near the circular pond.  The herbaceous borders, herb garden and old roses and climbers provide inspiration for keen gardeners.

West Dean  - there has been a garden at West Dean since 1622. The ornamental grounds are expansive with lavishly planted herbaceous borders. A stunning 300 ft long Edwardian pergola is very impressive, as is the restored Victorian walled kitchen garden.

Thurs    Borde Hill  is a stunningly beautiful and botanically rich heritage garden, set within  over 150 acres of traditional parkland. It captivates and delights visitors with a series of intimate ‘living garden rooms’, fine woodland, parkland, lakes and outstanding views across the magnificent Sussex High Weald. In the afternoon visit Wakehurst Place which is administered and maintained by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. The Wellcome Trust Millennium Building, adjacent to Wakehurst Place, aims to house seeds from ten per cent of the world's flora by 2009, to save species from extinction in the wild. Enjoy the Millennium Seed Bank interactive public exhibition in the Orange Room and follow the journey of a seed from identification and collection, through to drying and cold storage in the massive underground vaults.

Fri  Depart after breakfast

The above is a sample of the gardens that may be visited. Others in the area may be substituted if the leaders feel that others have more to offer due to blooming conditions.
