Burgundy  Cycle and Cruise
 

A guided cycle / barge tour along the Burgundy Canal and the Saone River in France. En route we visit castles and vineyards. There is also the option of simply staying on board the boat to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Each night the barge moves on to a different stop. Meals are included on board.

Tour profile: Easy cycling at a relaxed pace.

Grading: Moderate  

Bikes: 7 speed hybrid bike.  We recommend bringing your own helmet.

Included:  Seven nights accommodation in two-berth cabin with shower and toilet,  breakfast,
lunch and dinner daily, bike rental, guided cycling, transfer from/to Dijon, a wine-tasting session, entrance to the Museum of the Burgundy Canal.

Meeting point: Dijon. 

 Itinerary

 Day One: In the afternoon join the barge in Dijon the capital of Burgundy. Meet the barge crew and your guide. Dinner.

Day Two: Start the day with a short cycle ride around the northwest area of Dijon. In the afternoon enjoy a short guided walk of the city. (12.5 miles)

Day Three: Sail through the locks on the Burgundy Canal, then cycle past the beautiful Citeaux Abbey founded in 1098. Continue to the village of Longecourt en Plaine (28 miles)

Day Four: Cycle along small roads through forests and past small villages to the historical
town of Auxonne. Later, follow the River Saone to St Jean de Losne where it meets the Burgundy Canal. (28 miles)

Day Five: Cycle to the attractive town of Beaune with its cobbled streets and abundant wine-tasting opportunities. Enjoy some free time to visit the Church of Notre-Dame or the Museum of Wine. Continue to the small town of Verdun sur Les Doubs to rejoin your barge. (34 miles)

Day Six:  Follow the Canal du Centre to the port town of Chalon-sur-Saone. On this free afternoon explore the old town, visit one of Chalon's museums or relax with a glass of Cote Chalonnaise wine (16 miles).

Day Seven: Cycle along an old railway track to Buxy where you visit a winery. We then descend to the Rover Saone and continue to Tournus, a beautiful town and home of one of the oldest abbeys in France.

Day Eight: Transfer by train to Dijon.

Alternate weeks the tour operates in reverse.
