Provence  Barge and Cycle
 

Journey by bike and barge from the wild beauty of the Camargue to the vineyards and lavender fields of Provence. Stay on a barge and enjoy leisurely cycling through Provencal villages.

Tour profile: A mix of cycle tracks and quiet rural roads. There are some busier stretches entering or leaving cities.

Grading: Moderate  

Bikes: Hybrid bike.  We recommend bringing your own helmet.

Included:  Seven nights accommodation in twin bed cabin with shower and toilet,  breakfast,
lunch and dinner daily, bike rental, guided cycling

Barge:  Two barges operate this tour - the 10 cabin L'Estello and the 12 cabin Soleo.  Cabins are air conditioned with private bathroom.

Meeting point: Aigues-Mortes    Depart from Avignon. 
Alternate weeks the tour operates in reverse

 Itinerary

 Day One:  Meet the barge in the medieval city of Aigues-Mortes. Dinner.

Day Two: Spend a day enjoying cycling through the wilderness and wildlife refuge of the Camargue. ( 28 miles)

Day Three:  Be bewitched by wild beauty and authentic traditions as you ride beside salt lakes and wetlands to Saintes Maries de la Mer.  (38 miles)

Day Four: Sail to Arles and explore the Roman monuments and the shaded terraces. You will be surrounded by scenes that inspired painters including Van Gogh (9 miles)

Day Five: Today takes us to the Alpilles, the perched village of Les Baux and to Saint Remy de Provence. Cycle through a landscape of limestone, lavender and olive groves before spending the night moored at the pretty village of Vallabreques  (31 miles)

Day Six:  One of the many highlights today is the impressive Pont du Gard, the best preserved Roman aqueduct in Europe. From here the route winds its way to the banks of the Rhone and the beautiful city of Avignon. (33 miles).

Day Seven: The final cycle day follows quiet roads beside the famous Rhone vineyards towards Chateauneuf-du-Papes before returning along the banks of the river (26 miles)

Day Eight: Departure after breakfast.

Alternate weeks the tour operates in reverse starting in Avignon.
