Barcelona and Andalusia
Southern Spain

The elegant Parador of Nerja is a modern, four-star, low-rise hotel set on a promontory overlooking the Mediterranean, the coastline and the lovely natural landscape of the area. A beach below the hotel is reached by a modern elevator. There is a splendid garden where exotic flowers bloom among the orange trees.

The spacious, light-filled interiors are elegant and modern. All the rooms in the hotel have large terraces looking onto the sea. The hotel has air conditioning and central heating. There is a currency exchange, elevator, satellite television, free wireless internet, garden, restaurant, bar and beach. (swimming pool is not open in March).

A short walk away is the Nerja historic centre and the famous Balcony of Europe, the spectacular promenade along a towering cliff, where a Moorish castle used to stand.

Parador Hotels are owned and operated by the government of Spain. Many are historic buildings such as monasteries or castles converted to hotels. The Parador at Nerja was built in 1930 on order of the King of Spain to take advantage of the beautiful sea-front location. The mandate of the Parador group is to provide excellent accommodation that reflects the culture of the region and to offer cuisine typical of the area.  Breakfasts are sumptuous buffets and dinner menus include dishes typical of the region. For sure you will sample Andalusian gazpacho, avocados, olive oil from Jaen, almond sauces and a variety of fresh Mediterranean fish.  Dessert recipes show an Arab influence using honey and exotic tropical fruits.

Another of the aims of Paradores' gastronomy is to offer good food for those with special dietary needs, such as vegetarian or gluten sensitivity.

In Barcelona we stay at the Almirante. It is a 4-star hotel whose interior has been recently renovated in sleek Spanish ultra-modern style. The hotel is ideally located in the heart of the Gothic quarter a few metres away from the Cathedral, Picasso Museum and the Palau de la Música and just a few minutes from the Borne area, famous for its restaurants. Comfortable modern bedrooms all have private bathrooms with hair dryer, air conditioning, free wifi, satellite television and safety deposit box.
