ISLE OF ARRAN - SCOTLAND

HF Discovery Tours stay at the same hotel for seven nights. Groups are  12 - 15 participants. 
Transportation is by minibus with an expert guide.
Often referred to as “Scotland in Miniature” the Isle of Arran offers every type of scenery found on the Scottish mainland. In addition there are castles, prehistoric burial cairns and standing stones; truly a wealth of history. An added attraction of Arran is its stunning variety of wildlife. From the dolphins and seals that swim off the
island’s beaches, to red deer and eagles.

Itinerary:  The following are just some of the highlights. Our back-roads touring will include lovely scenery, visits to interesting villages and many historic sites.

Saturday: Arrive by train and ferry from Glasgow in time for afternoon tea . (Travel to Arran not included). 

Sunday: Our holiday starts with an easy walk into Lamlash with views of Holy Island. In Lamlash we visit the memorial to folk cleared from Arran and view the estate houses built by the Duke of Hamilton. A short drive to Arran folk museum which shows island life before setting off for Brodick Castle with its wonderful grounds and gardens.

Monday: Today we visit the northeast coast of Arran giving us an opportunity for seal, bird and eagle spotting. We explore the scenic village of Corrie popular with geologists and artists, then visit north Sannox stopping for 
lunch and an easy walk. Our last stop of the day is the whisky distillery at Lochranza offering whisky tours
 and tastings.

Tuesday: Today we take a short ferry ride to Kintyre across the Kilbrannan Sound. We explore the ruined 
castle of Skipness, its graveyard and ancient carved gravestones. We stop at the fishing village of Tarbet for 
lunch, after which we head along a scenic road with great views across to Gigha, Isla and Jura to visit the sculptured stones of Kilberry.

Wednesday: A free day for you to explore the local area. You could take a ferry to the Holy Isle and explore 
this natural haven with its Buddhist Monastery.

Thursday: We cross the middle of Arran on the string road to visit the six stone circles of Machrie Moor. The stones themselves date from the Bronze and Neolithic ages and are well worth the one mile walk. After a 
coffee stop we visit Lochranza Castle with a chance of seeing tame red deer grazing around the golf club.

Friday: Our first stop is a short walk to Kings Cross - significant not only with Vikings but also Robert the 
Bruce. Then we visit Kildonan with its beautiful beach, home to a large colony of seals, with views of Pladda 
and Ailsa Craig. We visit Torrylin Creamery, home of Arran cheese, and Balmichael Visitor Centre for a variety of of crafts.

Saturday: Depart after breakfast.

Cost per person: (based on double occupancy)  729 GBP (Great Britain pounds)
Sole occupancy supplement:  257 GBP
A few small single rooms are sometimes available a supplement of 49 GBP 
Extra charges for admissions to museums approximately 50 GBP  

Getting to Arran: 
Trains from Glasgow Central Station to Ardrossan Harbour take 1 hour and connect with ferries. The train stops at the ferry terminal. The ferry to Arran takes 55 minutes. On Saturdays a free coach
meets the 15:15 ferry and transports guests to the hotel. To return there is a coach to connect with the 11:05 ferry. This 4 mile journey can also be made by taxi

Where we stay:  : Altachorvie is situated at the edge of the typical
Scottish coastal village of Lamlash. From its elevated position the house
enjoys stunning views over rolling lawns and the sea to Holy Isle. Rooms
have private bath equipped with a hairdryer. Facilities include a bar, lounge, conservatory and croquet lawn. All meals are included. All HF hotels are non-smoking.
