This
holiday is based in a quiet country location in England's lovely
Lake District near Windermere. Each day we travel by private
minibus to explore historic houses and sites as well as lovely
countryside. We admire
remarkable landscapes much praised by poets and writers and
visit villages that would have been familiar
to them.

Itinerary: The
following are just some of the highlights. Our back-roads
touring will include lovely scenery, visits to interesting
villages and many historic sites.
Saturday:
Arrive in time for afternoon tea at Coniston. (Travel to
Coniston not included).
Sunday:
Travel to Grange-over-Sands, a
tranquil and charming Edwardian resort on the Cumbrian coast
with fabulous views of Morecambe Bay. We visit the quaint village
of Cartmel, home of sticky toffee pudding,
with its impressive medieval gatehouse and magnificent priory.
Tour Holker Hall, one of the best loved stately
homes in Britain, set in exceptionally beautiful countryside with
gardens that merge into parkland, framed by
the Lakeland hills.
Monday: Visit Tarn Hows with its sheer beauty and picturesque
views towards the Helvellyn range and the Langdale Pikes.
Explore the 30-acre gardens on Windermere’s lakeshore at
Brockhole, the Lake District’s
popular visitor centre. Visit Blackwell, the unforgettable Arts
and Crafts house which remains an
internationally important icon of Arts and Crafts architecture,
before viewing the Gothic revival-style Wray
Castle, the former holiday home of Beatrix Potter.
Tuesday: We take a spectacular ride over the Wrynose and
Hardknott passes to view the impressive Roman
fort. Ride on Lakeland’s most scenic miniature railway before
driving into Wasdale to experience the finest
view in Britain. Arriving on the west coast, we visit the
haunted historic Muncaster Castle with 70 acres of
stunning gardens and the owl centre. We return over Corney Fell
with superb views of the west coast and
Irish Sea.
Wednesday: Free day in which to explore independently and
perhaps have a cruise on the lake.
Thursday: Visit the remarkable Lakeland Motor Museum, housing
some 30,000 exhibits. Experience the Haverthwaite to Lakeside
steam train ride before sailing to Bowness on a Windermere Lake
steamer, the most popular attraction in Cumbria. Stroll in the
garden at Hilltop, Beatrix Potter’s home at Near Sawrey.
Friday: We take a riverside stroll to the village of Elterwater,
followed by morning coffee in the fabulous Great Langdale Valley
with enchanting views of the Langdale Pikes. Stroll in the 34
acres of woodland and formal gardens at Rydal Hall and view the
cascading falls. We have opportunities to visit Wordsworth’s
homes at
Rydal Mount and Dove Cottage and explore the quintessential village of Grasmere in the very heart of Lakeland
Saturday: Depart after breakfast.

Getting to Coniston: From
London, Euston Station there are direct trains to Oxenholme (2
hrs 20 min) and from there frequent trains to Windermere
Station. From Manchester there are direct trains to Windermere
(1.5 hrs). The 13 mile journey from Windermere to Coniston by
taxi costs £18 |

Where we stay: Monk
Coniston is a romantic Gothic-style hotel - complete with
minstrels' gallery - in extensive landscaped grounds.
Set near Coniston Water not far from Coniston Village, it enjoys
glorious views of the lake and hills. Forests, valleys and
unspoiled
villages make this an area of beautiful and spectacular scenery.
