Walkers' World
Guided Rambling Holidays in
Western Tuscany and
the Island of  Elba

 2009 Dates: Sept 19 - 29
(10 days)
Western Tuscany is a land of beautiful and unspoiled Italian coastline as well as inland hills in which nestle villages and towns dating back to the ancient Etruscan civilization. This region of Italy abounds with treasures - a crumbling castle where important Renaissance frescoes have been discovered - vineyards from which come great Italian white wines - small fishing villages - exquisite Mediterranean views. The Maremma region is one of the last great gems of Tuscany - still relatively undiscovered. Encompassing the rolling farmland and pristine beaches of the Tuscan seacoast, this area offers isolated white beaches, organic farm-fresh cuisine and most of all  - tranquility. The ancient Roman road known as the Via Aurelia leads us to Saturnia.  We stay here for five nights and have a chance to bathe in the spa waters of the thermal springs that the Romans and, later, the Medici revered for their curative properties.

From the coast we take an hour ferry ride to the idyllic island of Elba where, in 1814, Napoleon was exiled and today one can still see Napoleon's little palace where he sat with a telescope watching for ships. We stay for five nights and have a chance to explore historic sites as well as small villages and spectacular walks.
