Walkers' World  Guided Rambling Holidays
Provence, France    May 19- 26, 2012
                                                         September 15 - 22, 2012

This walking week is a "two-centred" holiday – returning to the same hotel on six of the seven nights with the final night in Avignon. Using private coaches to begin and end most walks enables us to explore the best parts of this beautiful region.

The Vaucluse region of Provence
was made famous by Peter Mayle's book "A Year in Provence".  A translation of a famous saying from the 14th century was "Provence has its paradise in the Vaucluse
The popes have their palaces in Avignon
The gods have their pavilions in Isle-sur-la-Sorgue"

Walking In the Vaucluse Region of Provence:
May 19 - 26, 2012           Sept 15 - 22, 2012
$1999 CAD
Based in the town of Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, we explore sun-drenched countryside and historic villages.   Our rambles include Fontaine de Vaucluse where water cascades from a magic spring, medieval villages like Gordes, trails through vineyard after vineyard whose names sound like a wine list in a great restaurant.  We visit flower-filled St. Rémy where Van Gogh painted and fabled Les Baux with its legends of the "Court d’Amour". On our non-walking day we visit the town of Arles with its Roman arena where gladiators once fought. In Avignon we see the legendary bridge and the Papal Palace.

We divide our walks into two groups: Tranquil and Sportif. This is ideal for couples and friends who want to travel together yet have differing walking abilities.
Tranquil - are leisurely walks done at a relaxed pace with lots of stopping to appreciate the views. Although the walk lasts most of the day, this group walks a shorter distance than the "sportif" group thus often reaching its destination first. There is time to drink at a café and to explore small villages. Distance is less than 10 km per day with 300 metres of ascent. Walking is on country roads, stony mule paths, quiet woodland trails and farm tracks.

Sportif  walks - are more energetic than the tranquil group. Maximum distance could be up to 16 km with up to 500 metres of ascent. These are not athletic events and the emphasis is still on having fun. There may be occasional steep ascents but they will be done at a moderate pace.
