Frequently Asked Questions:

Do I need to book the flight starting in Toronto?
No. You are free to make your own flight arrangements from any city. Teachers' Travel can book flights and issue tickets but if you prefer to make your own arrangements - no problem. Just meet us in Istanbul.  If you make your own flight arrangements you can meet the group at the Istanbul Airport and take the bus transfer to the hotel. If you arrive at a different time you can ask Teachers' Travel to arrange someone to meet you and transfer you to the hotel (at a cost), or you can make your own way to the hotel.

Do I need an entry visa for Turkey?
If you are Canadian with a valid Canadian passport you need an entry visa. This is obtained on arrival at Istanbul Airport and costs $60 US (cash).

How many people are in the group?
The ideal maximum number is about 20. Each holiday requires a minimum number of participants and we reserve the right to cancel any holiday if we do not have this number 60 days prior to the start. If a holiday is cancelled by us due to low number of participants, any deposits on that holiday will be refunded in full. We suggest that you do not purchase non-refundable air tickets until the minimum number of participants has been reached. Check with us before making your travel arrangements.

Who goes on these walking tours?
Most of the participants are Canadians from all across Canada. We occasionally get a few Americans, Australians and New Zealanders. Usually the groups are a mixture of singles and couples. The average age we would guess (it is sometimes difficult to tell) is probably 55 - 65.

What is the food like in Turkey?
The answer is  - Excellent !!!
Breakfast is usually a buffet which offers a choice of cereal, milk, fruit, juice, natural yoghurt, cheeses, cold meats, olives, hard-cooked eggs and an assortment of breads including fresh hot breads served with many varieties of honey. Thick Turkish coffee or tea are drunk with breakfast. Be careful of the coffee - there is enough caffeine in a small cup to keep you awake for weeks.

Dinners usually start with soup often using beans or lentils. This is followed by a fresh green salad. Turkey grows wonderful salad ingredients, especially cucumbers and tomatoes. Next comes a meat or fish dish accompanied by a variety of vegetables as side dishes. Sometimes the vegetables are fried, sometimes stuffed with rice and sometimes served with a yoghurt sauce. The food is not heavily spiced but very tasty. Good local wines are available. There is usually a dessert sweetened with honey such as  baklava as well as many other desserts.

The markets are filled with fruits, both fresh and dried. Snacks are figs, dates, dried apricots, sunflower seeds, oranges, pumpkin seeds soaked in milk then dried and a variety of almonds.
